St. Mary’s Brading hosted a very successful plant, craft and cake fare on Saturday May 13th. The event was extremely well attended and we raised £580.75p for church funds, to enhance our work on a heritage guide/trail. We thank everyone for their hard work and support.

Pauline Humber, Eve Toogood and Anne Mara

A message from Nigel Elton-Waters: In recent months we have lost three long serving members of the St Mary's congregation, Pauline Humber, Eve Toogood and Anne Mara.

We have received a donation of £100 towards something that we could have in and around the church in memory of the three ladies who served the church so well. At the recent PCC meeting we decided to buy a bench and place it on the lawn in front of the church hall with an inscription placed on the bench.

Jonathan Norton is the contact point if any one wishes to make a donation towards the purchase of the bench. If you are going to give a cheque, please can it be made out to PCC Brading General Account as Lloyds Bank have clamped down in recent months and seem to reject anything other than the correct title of our account.

St Mary’s Jumble Sale: 2.00pm on Saturday 3rd June

The doors open at our jumble sale at 2.00pm but donated items can be taken in from 11.00am onwards. This is a popular event and is thirsty work so refreshments will be available.

St Mary’s Open Café

There will be joint open café with the charity Ability Dogs 4 Young People in the church hall on Saturday 17th June from 10:30am onwards. Do come and meet some of the dogs who are in training.

St Peter’s Coffee Mornings

St Peter’s Church holds a coffee morning in the hall from 10.00am to 12.00 noon on the third Saturday of each month, with stalls, a tombola and a raffle. Everyone is made very welcome and the next coffee morning is on Saturday 17th June between 10.00am and 12.00noon.

St Peter’s Church

Work on St Peter’s Undercroft is due to complete in the next couple of weeks, providing an attractive usable space for use by meetings and groups. The Undercroft now features a modern kitchen and sunny courtyard plus level access from the street. Bookings & viewings are welcome, please contact Sylvia Beardsmore on 01983 612600.

St Peter’s Family Services

Although August may seem a long way off, it will soon be here and St Peter’s are hoping to hold two family services on 13th and 27th. In order to do so safely we need a minimum of three volunteers for each service. If you would be willing to help with this please contact Sylvia on 01983 612600 and we will arrange a planning meeting.

Conformation Course

The Island will be holding a Confirmation Service this year at 4 pm on 10th September in St John’s Church, Newport. A confirmation course starts at the end of May that candidates within your parishes are welcome to attend.

If you wish to go forward for confirmation, please let your church’s representative know so that you can be supported by prayer and preparation (see below for your benefice church’s first point of contact).

The course will be held on Tuesday evenings in the Parish Centre, Town Lane, Newport. The dates have been picked to avoid major school holidays. Each session will start at 7 pm with refreshments and will finish no later than 9 pm. The sessions will be as interactive as possible and will be suitable for all ages.
Week 1: 23rd May - Introduction - What is confirmation?
Break for Whitsun holidays
Week 2: 6th June - Who is God?
Week 3: 13th June - Who is Jesus?
Week 4: 20th June - Who is the Holy Spirit?
Week 5: 27th June - The Church
Week 6: 4th July - Living as a Christian
The course will be based on the book: Faith Confirmed: Preparing for Confirmation by Peter Jackson and Chris Wright and each church will need to buy a copy of this book for each candidate for their own reading and study.

Note for Church Representatives
If you have any candidates who would be interested in joining this confirmation course, please e-mail
emma(dot)cooksey(at)cofeheartofwight(dot)org to book a place.
