ST HELEN'S PEW FLOOR APPEAL

★ ★ St Helen's Tricentenary Appeal has now closed with the objectives having been realised. ★ ★

The Vicar and PCC of St Helen’s Church would like to thank you for your ongoing financial support especially during these very difficult times.

Work to install a kitchen and toilet into St Helen’s Church is progressing well. Drains are in, the old staircase removed and the font relocated. However, whilst progressing this work it has become apparent that the bearer timbers of the Pew floors in the Nave are suffering from damp, lack of ventilation and consequent rot.

SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE!

  • Ventilation to the underside of the timber pew flooring is difficult to achieve.
  • Vents do not presently exist in the external walls and would have to be cut in;
  • Cross ventilation from one side of the building to the other would require the aisle flooring - presently stone slabs - to be lifted to allow pipes to be set below from one side to the other.

In the scheme of current works the floor at the West end is to be replaced with a limecrete vapour porous flooring and finished with a stone slab. The use of limecrete allows ground moisture to evaporate through the flooring rather than be forced up the walls as happens with a standard concrete slab.

With this in mind it has been decided to remove the existing timber flooring and rotten bearers and continue the limecrete and stone slab flooring from the main entrance at the West end up the Nave to the present crossing with the transepts.

THE PROBLEM!

Whilst we had originally hoped the cost would be met from the existing contingency we had in place at the beginning of the project, it has become apparent that will not be possible as the total costs exceed what we have available.

We therefore need to raise additional funds to the tune of £15,000 as quickly as possible!

Would you be able to assist?
If so we would be very grateful!
