Celebrating Easter Day

It was a glorious Easter Day when the churches of the Haven Benefice celebrated Christ rising from the tomb and bringing us the eternal hope of resurrection.

The day started at 6.00am on the peaceful Duver at St Helen’s old church where 42 people gathered for worship at the service led by Ordinand Charlotte as first light crept across the calm sea. The Paschal Candle was lit from the fire in the brazier. During the service the dawn chorus of birds accompanied the singing of hymns and provided a sense of the discovery of Jesus’ empty tomb in the Garden of Gethsemane.

At St Mary’s Church, Brading, 20 breakfasts were served prior to the start of the 9:30am Sung Eucharist service, led by Reverend Barry, with a congregation of 45 parishioners welcoming our Risen Lord. The service started with the blessing of the Paschal Candle and of the decorated cross, and a heartfelt thank you was given to the members of the congregation whose flower arrangements adorned the church.

The Family Service at St Peter’s, Seaview, started at 10 o’clock and was led by its local minister Sylvia. The congregation comprised mainly young families, some accompanied by grandparents, in a congregation numbering well over 100. The “stars of the service” were the inflatable Easter chickens made by the children along with their inflatable aliens and spaceships!

The spring sunlight illuminated a packed St Helen’s church at 10am as worshippers arrived to find beautiful floral arrangements decorating the interior. The service was led by Reverend Janice and 130 adults and 30 children enthusiastically sang Easter Hymns. The children helped to illustrate a sermon based on Jeremiah’s words “to join in the merriment of the dance” by teaching the Hokey Cokey to the congregation who in return added their voices to the song.

Reverend Barry was in action again at the 11:00am Sung Eucharist at St John’s, Yaverland where a visitor reading the Pew Sheets expressed surprise and praise for our benefice managing to hold four Eucharistic services despite being in interregnum.

Meanwhile Reverend Malcolm led the congregation of 120 at the 11:15am Sung Eucharist service at St Peter’s, Seaview.

Commemorating Good Friday at St Peter’s, Seaview

Seventy people gathered in church during the evening of Good Friday for The Way of the Cross, performed by our Events Choir, directed by Howard Wilkie and assisted by our organist John Cheverton. Their words and music brought the Passion to life as the dramatic events of the Garden of Gethsemane, Pontius Pilate’s palace and Golgotha were recalled. Our thanks also go to Suki and Graham Pountney as choir lead and narrator respectively.

St Mary’s Church: On Easter Monday an Easter egg hunt around the church was open to all from 12:00noon, in conjunction with the bell tower open day, where members of the public were encouraged to try their hand at bell ringing.

St Peter's Church: The regular coffee morning was held in the church hall from 10:00am -12:00 noon on Saturday 15th April. Everyone was very welcome and, as always, there were stalls, tombola and a raffle.

St Mary's Open Café will be open from 10:30am onwards on Saturday 22nd April in the church hall with Brading Community Choir singing.

Nina Ross will be performing at a concert at Brading Roman Villa starting at 7:30pm on Saturday 22nd April.

Food Bank Collection Venues

St Mary’s Church continues as a collection point for tinned foods, toiletries and other essentials for those in need of aid in these difficult times. Please place your donations at the back of the church.

St Peter's Church: Food bank baskets for non-perishable food are also situated at the back of the church, The Orange Tree in Madeira Road and Penforma on the corner of Bluett Avenue and Salterns all in Seaview.

Can you help? We need bottles, lots of bottles!

St Helen’s Church will be having a stall at the May Fayre in Seaview on May 1st with a Bottle Tombola fundraising to convert the shed in the grounds of the Vicarage into a hub for children to use when doing activities in the churchyard. If you could give some bottles to help us, then we would be very grateful. The bottles can be filled with anything that is in date and unused.
Anything that comes in a bottle will do, from Champagne, whisky, ketchup, water, wine, body lotion, perfume, to vinegar …. the list is endless. Bottles can be left at the back of St Helen’s Church, given to Rose Gillett or collected if you ring 01983 612440 and leave a message.
Thanking you in anticipation of your support
